My fish and the aquatic world in which they reside possess a special significance for me. They serve to ground me in New York City, where one experiences so few living things (except for homo sapiens) on the streets. Although this feeling is probably common to many pet owners in New York, tropical fish are unique in regard to their entire independence from my world. They are aquatic, entirely of a different animal order. Sometimes the aquatic world is so interesting that I find myself turning away from watching TV and instead staring at the aquarium, which I might add, is also an underwater garden. Fish give me a feeling of relaxation and make me more contemplative. When they are feeling good (yes, fish do have "feelings"), it is very satisfying. I might add that tropical fish always bring good luck; ask any fish owner and they will tell you so.
